3 Things To Do If Your Child Knocks Out A Tooth

Kids are accident-prone, and sometimes in those accidents, they get injured. That could mean that they fall over and get their teeth knocked out. If that happens, then you need to know how to handle the situation so that you can make sure that your child heals up as well as possible, especially if they managed to knock out a permanent tooth.

Stop the Bleeding

The first thing that you are going to want to do is to stop any bleeding that might be going on. If you have a younger child, then the bleeding can scare them and make them even more upset than they might already be. If you have gauze, you can just pack some gauze down into the socket for the missing tooth and have them bite down on it. That will put pressure on the socket, just as if you were putting pressure on any other cut. If you don't have gauze, you can have them hold a towel or washcloth to their mouth. You might want to go with a darker color so that your child can't see the blood on the towel which could upset them.

Rinse the Tooth

Once you have any bleeding under control and your child calmed down, you want to rinse the tooth off. You want to make sure that you are rinsing off any dirt and debris, but not washing off any tissue that might be on the tooth. You also don't want to scrub the tooth or subject it to a strong stream of water. Just a gentle flow of cool water should work. While you are rinsing off the tooth, make sure that you are holding it by the crown of the tooth and not by the root because you could cause damage it if you are holding it by the root. That damage could make it harder for the tooth to settle back into the mouth and stay there.

Store the Tooth Safely

You need to make sure that you are storing the tooth safely when you are done rinsing it off. Ideally, you want to store it right back into the socket of your child's jaw because there really isn't any safer place for it. However, if you can't do that, then put it in a cup and cover it in spit or milk until you can get to the dentist.

If your child has knocked out their tooth, your family dentist can help get the tooth to grow back where it should be.
